What Book Review?

Hope you weren't expecting a review today.  (Again.)  I've been averaging about 2,500 words a day on the WIP, so I've had zero reading time.  It'll probably be more of the same next week.

But I'll make it up to you, I promise.  Come November I'll hop back on the review bandwagon.

So for today we have another #amwriting Thursday.

Something I've noticed about my writing over the last week is that the further I get in a story, the sorter my scenes get.  I guess it's because the pace of the story is flying now, we're at the climax and everything is short and concise so it doesn't get bogged down.

Do you all do that?  I'm sure when I go back through for revisions they'll get longer and more fleshed out.  Still.

As a reader do short (not overly so, like 2-3 pages short) scenes bother you?

I'm really interested to see what you all have to say.

Short scenes don't bother me at all. And congrats on flying through! You're doing a great job!

Woo hoo! Good job on making so much progress! :) I notice the same thing about my writing but with chapters. All of my chapters near the end of my manuscripts are shorter than the beginning ones. I've thought about fleshing them out but I think it pulls away from the action too much. Interesting habit.

2,500 a day?! Screw the reviews, keep going lady!!

I love when I get to that place, because basically you are telling Future Holly what happens in each scene. Future Holly will then be able to add all kinds of setting and emotional development and yadda yadda. For now you just need to know WHAT HAPPENS.

And of course as a reader I don't mind short scenes, but I do expect them to be dense. When I read a shorter scene I take more time, because if there's only 500 words there, I bet the author has been very specific in their choice of exactly those 500.

At this point, whatever works!

excellent progress! I'm thinking about this, and I don't know if it's true for me that the scenes get shorter. But on the first go, I try to just get to the end. Then my first read-through, I try to beef up/flesh out where needed...

helpful? :o)

Thanks, Abby!

Pam, that's what I'm thinking right now. That fleshing them out may pull away from the action too much. We'll see what my lovely betas think once I'm done.

Sarah, you're right. When I read short scenes I always feel like they tell me more than the longer ones -- like they have a greater purpose. Good point.

LTM, that's exactly what I'm doing. Trying to get to the end at a break-neck pace. ;)

Yay for actually writing!

My scenes/chapters get a little shorter but not much. Short chapters don't bother me. Actually I'm more bothered about really long chapters, where I can't wait til it's over. (Of course a long chapter written well is thrilling :)
